S52 is the biggest which is a 3.2ltr I6.

Transmissions look like they have the same bolts/holes but length, I dunno.

Does all the beemer gear boxes have the same bolt holes or do they vary and this 3.2 engine will it fit in the 1996 e36 car with no issues?

- BMWs do not share the same transmission set ups, no. Only sometimes

- I've never done it but I imagine it would be quite an easy(ish) swap. You wouldn't want too though as it would be cheaper to just purchase an E36 M3

It's Valentine's Day and I love you mate (not in a gay way).
You are on a distinguished road to becoming a spanner-boy ! No more sweeping the garage floor for you, sunshine...  ;)
Good stuff Mukka :)
